Today we did a puberty review game on Kahoot and reviewed the puberty toolbox. Students are encouraged to show the toolkit to their parents/guardians and discuss if any of these items/routines should be added into their lives at this point.

Tomorrow, we will begin looking at male anatomy and reproductive system.
Students not participating in the human sexuality unit will be spending time doing literacy/numeracy on Friday.

May 25, 2021

We have started our Human Sexuality Unit. For those students not participating, they are working on a project about peer pressure and healthy choices. Parents/guardians, please contact me if you would like links to resources for teaching human sexuality yourself and having these conversations with your child.

For students who are participating, we started off by reviewing ground rules and puberty. Tomorrow we will review facts and myths. Students are encouraged to come up with a list of questions to go over with an adult they trust to ask about "What was it like when you were my age?" and open the door for discussion.

April 7, 2021

Yesterday, students wrapped up their Crunch Time Snack poster project with their partners and handed them in. Today, we began looking at substances that may be used or refused. Students brainstormed what substances they might be exposed to between grade 7 and 9, and wrote down questions they have. I will work on answering some of those questions, however some will be addressed only briefly as students will learn more as they go through health in higher grades. Tomorrow, we will be looking at facts around harmful substance use among youth in Alberta, and focus on what might influence teens to use or refuse harmful substances. The focus of this unit will be making healthy choices, practicing refusing unhealthy substances, and ensuring students know where to go for accurate, evidence based information to inform their decisions. If you have questions or want more information, check out Drug Free Kids Canada

March 26, 2021

As today's period was shorter, some students did not quite complete their group poster. As this is a partner assignment and cannot be done over the break under the current COVID-19 restrictions, I will give students a work period on Tuesday, April 6th to finish up and catch up on work. The posters will be due on Wednesday April 7th. Enjoy your break and stay safe and healthy!

March 24, 2021

For the past week, students have been wrapping up their nutrition unit and creating a poster to show their fellow Boas how to make healthy snack choices.

March 11, 2021

This week, students finished working through their Tom Baines Mental Wellness booklet. This booklet is available online on Google Classroom, as well as other resources to help develop skills to tend to mental wellness.

March 4, 2021

Today was student choice day, so they had time to review for their math test or complete their Confederation booklet if necessary. Tomorrow, please have a novel or book to read.

March 3, 2021

Today we looked at healthy sleeping habits and routines. Having a full night's rest is crucial for physical, mental, and emotional health. It helps with your learning too! Think of ways you can improve your sleep routines and schedules, and challenge your family to do the same.

Tomorrow, we will have student choice day.

March 2, 2021

Today, students continued working on their Tom Baines mental wellness booklet. Today we reviewed the importance of gratitude, considered what values we think are the most important, and reflected upon which values we live out each day. Tomorrow, we will be looking at sleeping habits and routines that help (or hurt!) our sleep cycle.

February 25th, 2021

This week, we began our Mental Wellness week. Today students participated in Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday by creating paper pink shirts with anti-bullying, pro-kindness messages, wrote what they are grateful for on a slip of paper for Gold Pod Gratitude, and listened to a presentation on online safety and anti-bullying. Today and for the next week, students will be working through the booklet created by Mrs. Bartlett around mental wellness.

February 22nd, 2021

Today in health, students finished watching Fed Up, and began to look at how to make healthier choices through beverages. Tomorrow, we will continue to work on the Thirst Quenchers task before moving onto the Tom Baines mental wellness unit that we will complete as a school.

February 19th, 2021

Hello! My apologies for leaving this blog post for so long. In health over the last few weeks, we have been looking at nutrition. Students learned about how to read nutrition labels, that ingredients are listed in order of mass, and what types of grains to incorporate into their diet. This week, we spent three periods watching the 2014 documentary Fed Up (linked on Google Classroom) that looks at the food industry and sugar consumption, focusing on the United States. While the situation differs in Canada, we can all learn to incorporate more whole foods and reduce the amount of processed food we eat each day. I have been encouraging the class to think of small, healthy changes they can make that will add up over time- for example, choosing to drink water at every meal and eating real fruit instead of drinking fruit juice whenever possible.

Next week, we will look at the nutritional value of different drinks and beverages, and we will be talking about mental health too.
